A people that cannot remember what was done to it cannot recognize the same mechanism when it comes back wearing new language.
Attack the body, home, shrine, village, woman, speech.
Rename it “tensions,” “complexity,” “offense,” or “community relations.”
Turn the witness into the threat.
Make the next generation inherit trauma with no map.
Centuries of temple destruction, coercion, communal attacks, forced conversion pressure, and minority vulnerability get softened into “history.” Then modern Hindus are told that remembering is the real danger.
Forgiveness without memory is not peace. It is disarmament.
In South Asia, Hindu minorities still face attacks on homes, businesses, temples, and public religious life, especially in Bangladesh and Pakistan.
In Pakistan, UN experts warned in 2026 about continuing abduction and forced conversion through marriage affecting religious minorities.
The slide is about the danger of having an archive but no alarm system: facts exist, but the public memory is trained to apologize for noticing them.
Line to throw: “You are not hateful for remembering how your people were made vulnerable.”
A Yazidi survivor does not only carry a story. She carries evidence. When institutions treat that evidence as dangerous because it may offend the wrong audience, they are not protecting tolerance. They are protecting forgetting.
The slavery was not the problem.
The witness is the problem.
ISIS abducted thousands of Yazidi women and children in 2014; many survivors describe sexual slavery, captivity, family separation, and forced conversion.
Yazidi organizations and humanitarian groups still report large numbers of missing Yazidi women and children.
The cancellation is literal. In 2021, Toronto school-board staff pulled out of a student book-club event featuring Nobel laureate Nadia Murad’s memoir of ISIS captivity, The Last Girl, saying it could “promote Islamophobia.” Only after public backlash did the board apologize and let the event proceed.
That cancellation frame matters because it shows the second abuse: after the captivity comes the pressure to make the testimony socially convenient.
Line to throw: “Do not ask the enslaved woman to protect the reputation of the ideology that enslaved her.”
The Druze do not have the luxury of abstract security language. Idlib taught one lesson. Sweida taught it again: when state protection collapses, minority survival becomes local, immediate, and armed with memory.
A minority that remembers is called sectarian. A minority that forgets is called dead.
In 2015, al-Nusra-linked jihadists killed Druze villagers in Qalb Lozeh, Idlib province.
In July 2025, Sweida saw mass violence and abuses; UN reporting in 2026 cited possible war crimes and a death toll around 1,700.
So when Sweida Druze secure roads and neighborhoods, the real question is not “why are they defensive?” It is “who proved they could protect them?”
Line to throw: “You do not get to call self-defense extremism after abandoning people to slaughter.”
“Farmer-herder conflict” may describe one layer. It does not erase Islamist militants, church attacks, village raids, kidnappings, blasphemy mobs, and the specific vulnerability of Christians.
Do not flatten Christians out of their own graves.
Nigeria remains one of the most dangerous countries for Christians, especially in northern and central regions affected by Islamist militants and militant Fulani attacks.
Churches, villages, worshippers, pastors, and children have been targeted through killings, kidnappings, displacement, and destruction of religious sites.
The erasure happens when every motive is named except the one victims can see: they are often attacked as Christians.
Line to throw: “Complex causes do not cancel targeted victims.”
Not every protester is noble. Not every sentence is wise. But a state that acts faster against the alarm than against the reason for the alarm teaches the public that order means humiliation.
A mocked public does not become moderate. It becomes ungovernable.
The UK has expanded public-order and protest enforcement, including proposed offences around certain protest tactics and protests at officials’ homes.
Britons who see immigration, grooming gangs, Islamist intimidation, or two-tier policing as real issues often feel morally blackmailed before they are answered.
The slide is not “all patriots are innocent.” It is: punishing alarm without restoring trust is political self-harm.
Line to throw: “You cannot police a nation out of noticing what it can see.”
Told secular maturity means forgetting asymmetric wounds.
Told testimony is dangerous because truth may offend.
Told self-defense is suspicious while protection fails.
Told targeted killing is just “conflict.”
Told their alarm is the crime before the state restores trust.
The victim is always asked to become morally impressive by becoming operationally stupid.
Remembering is the minimum requirement for protection, justice, and adult civilization.
It is not permission to hate random people. It is not a license to become the thing that attacked you.
A boundary. A witness. A map of danger. The first wall rebuilt after a civilization admits it was breached.
Nadia’s Initiative describes ISIS’s 2014 attack on Sinjar as an ethnic-cleansing/genocidal campaign against Yazidis. Save the Children said about 1,300 Yazidi children remained missing ten years later. In November 2021, the Globe and Mail (then BBC, CBC and others) reported that a Toronto District School Board superintendent withdrew support for a student book-club event featuring Nadia Murad’s The Last Girl over “Islamophobia” concerns; the board later apologized and the event went ahead. Reuters reported that a UN probe found possible war crimes in Sweida violence and cited roughly 1,700 deaths; Christian Science Monitor reported Nusra killed 20 Druze villagers in Qalb Lozeh in 2015.
Reuters reported Hindu homes, businesses, and temples attacked in Bangladesh after Hasina’s ouster; UN experts warned in 2026 about forced conversion through marriage in Pakistan. Open Doors ranks Nigeria among the worst countries for Christian persecution and says violence remains severe. Reuters reported UK plans to criminalize protests outside officials’ homes and expand protest offences.
